I had a wonderful experience during my time at MDA, the Maverick Driving Academy. Everyone there was awesome with there people skills and proving the information that a beginner would need, but that's where the enjoyable time stopped! Once I was out with a driver trainer, I was subjected to porn, full on masturbation while they were driving. Also I was not taught anything, just told to drive in which my time was never reported so I was there for nothing. Once I was given my own truck, I thought i was going to do a jam up job only to find out that it was just a game to Maverick. They don't care about employees unless its one of their office employees. They never paid me my detention pay or break down pay like they brag about paying. While I was on vacation, my truck was parked at a Pilot and once i went back on duty, I noticed some damage to the truck while doing my walk around inspection. I took photos and reported it right then however I was told that it was my fault and received safety points. It all went down hill from there. I couldn't ever get to a terminal to get my truck fixed, I wasn't getting the mileage that or guaranteed pay that I was told I would get, then when I got hurt on my own personal time and took a short 2 week leave per my doctor, they called me after hours and fed me a line of lies to terminate me. Maverick was wonderful at helping me get my cdl, but I would never recommend this company to anyone outside of that!

Not a bad company but not really a good one either. They will mislead you and flat out lie to you about certain things. They will do whatever they can to increase your safety points so they don't have to give you as much performance pay. Whatever you do, do not report every little scratch. They will write up a misleading report and send it to DAC which makes you look like a terrible driver. It can make it very difficult in getting another trucking job in the future. You must watch your back and cover your you know with this company. They are not totally honest people there. I have been told that they are government funded and in the training business not the trucking business and I believe it.

Pros

Good for a beginner company but you don't want to stay there long. Had an excellent fleet manager though and my equipment was good after being with them for awhile.

Cons

Their Safety is terrible and out to get you and If you don't know how to play their game you will be put on probation and then fired if you have another incident. Then they send all of this info to DAC and it's on your record for seven long years. They will mislead you and lie to you and tell you you're doing a great job and they think you're a good driver and yet they will do all of this stuff behind your back. When confronted with it they will tell you they have to report it per the government

I worked there for 9 months the flatbed training was very good and the facility is awesome. However that's where it stops being enjoyable. The driver trainers are adequate at best and the equipment that they give new drivers his poor to adequate as they are older freightliners they are going to sell. As a new driver the first two weeks to one month the good communication is very good with your fleet manager and you would assume the job would be fantastic however after you are given a permanent fleet manager things go downhill from there. For the first month or so you are home every weekend starting Friday and not leaving until Sunday after that slowly you will start getting home Saturday mornings, then Saturday afternoons and this lasted until the day I left a company. And then it ended up being strictly a 34-hour reset at home and then back on the road. I was told by several employees to watch my back because safety is out to get you, at first I did not believe it but that is in fact true. They will do whatever is in their power to reduce your safety performance today including judging you on your idle time, e-logs and anything else that they can dock your pay or reduce your safety performance pay. They don't fix what is broken on the truck, and the only thing they're really concerned about is the PM's for their equipment but the maintenance techs never resolve the issues while you're there and will force you to keep running. And when you leave the company they will do everything in their power to Doc you anything they think is owed including having a dirty truck. Lastly, I was was told by a veteran Maverick driver that they do not want drivers to be with Maverick for over a year because at that point the are a liability they would much rather put a new less-expensive driver in the seat and have you move on to a different company. That's why you see so many young drivers with Maverick a very seldom see veteran drivers with that company at all. Also there's a lot of resentment within the drivers among other drivers. No one seems happy ( for obvious reasons) and you can't trust anybody either on the road or in the terminals. Other than that, it's a great company!!

Lie about home time. Threaten drivers of probation/termination. Blame drivers for “poor time management” but then have drivers sitting for 16 hours waiting for appointment time.

Q: Oh Boy Decisions Decisions. All of them offer schooling and pay is decent for all of them. They all require MINIMUM Year contract I believe Carter Express requires little longer, but they have drop yard in Cincinnati.
Who to go with?

 

A: Maverick just wanted like 5 weeks of Classroom training with out pay, they provide meals and lodging but doesn't help the family at home.

Heading For Little Rock! Maverick

When i found out that I was going to Little Rock, I asked that if Steve Williams (Founder Of Maverick) was going to be in that week and if I could just swing by and shake his hand and thank him for all that Maverick has done for me. Well he was going to be in and they set me up with a 30 minute meeting with him.
While waiting to meet him, I also got to meet Steve Selig, President of Maverick. My meeting with Steve Williams was fantastic! He is such a wonderful person. He actually thanked me for taking the time to come down and meet him. I got to spend 45 minutes with him. I walked away understanding why Maverick is the company that it is today and with a deep sense of pride! I am so glad to be part of the Maverick Family!

Maverick TCD Questions

As a TCD driver with 14 months solo time:

Home time: You get 1 day of home time for every week you stay out. Minimum is 2 weeks. The longer you stay out, you can get the better routes and better pay. 

Trainers: Regardless of where you live, you aren't likely to get assigned to a trainer anywhere near where you live. Maverick pays for a hotel for students to stay in while their trainer is on home time.

Miles: Average weekly miles are between 2,000 and 2,500 per week. There was a stretch of time when it was a challenge to get 2,000 per week, but the loads have been coming a lot better since then. It all depends on who is shipping, and where you are running. Some areas of the country don't have a lot of Maverick business, so the pickings can be slim.

Equipment: 2013-2017 model year Freightliner Cascadias. Many of the '16 and just about all of the '17 trucks have refrigerators. Maverick is retiring many of their older TCD trailers, replacing them with brand new trailers (manufacture dates of March and May 2016). Equipment quality and upkeep is really dependent on the drivers. Maverick isn't shy about getting repairs completed, especially when they're needed.

We have a glass plant in de witt, pretty big and I usually come in and out of that plant. If you're interested there's dedicated spots that rides with ezroll trailers so no playing with tarps. The pay is less than otr glass. 

If you want to go flatbed, I'm not sure if they would allow you to park your truck there but that bp down the road seem friendly.

Pay is the same empty and loaded, no driver cam, they do have forward lane departure crap and I saw the quality of the camera so would recommend getting your own for protection.

Q: Anyone out there know anything about or been through Maverick's Sponsored CDL Training program? I know it is 4 weeks long, unpaid and you go through Maverick company orientation first. (orientation week is paid if you complete it)

 

A: Yes, orientation pay is $550 in the form of a VISA card. They'll buy you a bus ticket to come down to their headquarters in Little Rock. During orientation, housing, breakfast, and lunch is covered. Then, they put you on a bus to Arkansas State University for the 4 week CDL program. Housing plus breakfast + lunch is covered. (The $550 should cover dinners) Once that's complete, you have extended hometime before they assign you to a driver trainer. Training lasts about 3-6 weeks or longer depending on if you're ready to go solo or not. They want you to be confident on the road. They'll forgive the cost of CDL School at $500/month. This doesn't come out of your paycheck, they just forgive it. If you leave the company early, you're on the hook for the rest of the cost though.

Q: hey can any one tell me how long i have to stay away from my family when i first start at maverick i hear a couple months i already have my class a cdl but just want to start flat bedding any info would be much appriciated thanks a lot

 

A: This is my understanding: Depending on the division you hire into, you would spend 2-3 weeks in LR for orientation and hands on training. (Temperature Controlled division is the least and Glass the longest.) Assuming you make it beyond that point, you would go out with a trainer for a minimum of 21 days, but it could be 5 weeks (longer if you still need/want further). Some trainers like to keep all their students for 5 weeks, regardless of how well you progress. After that, you return to LR to evaluate out, which is typically 2-4 days. You may or may not get to go home while out with a trainer; it depends on how close to you they live and whether or not they go home during that period. As I understand it, Mav does offer to let you go home for a few days if you have been away from home for a certain number of weeks. I don't recall what the magic number was. 

If you hire in with at least 6 months of recent experience, then I think you must do a road test but are not required to go out with a trainer.

Start of a new journey.....

Everything has gone great. Did 5 weeks with an OTR trainer and now on my own. I delivered a load last Friday that for me home. I leave out this coming Wednesday. If anybody wants info on maverick about anything you are more than welcome to message me and I'll give you the best answer I can. If can't answer it I had an amazing recruiter.

Q: I've just been accepted into the TCD and am waiting to hear about orientation date. I'm already thinking about hometime. I'm single and my family mostly lives far away anyway so I don't really care about getting a ton of hometime. My home is actually an old piece of family property in the middle of nowhere, PA where I live alone. When I do go home though, does it have to be home? I'd rather do some exploring than sit around at home. Could I let my dispatcher know I want to spend my hometime somewhere else and they could try to give me some loads in that direction?

 

A: When you send in your hometime request you follow it up with a freeform message to your fleet manager stateing where u want to take it

 

A: As long as it is in the freight lanes, it is not a problem!
