In the ltl business it's mostly just different color trucks,if you jump for one 1 company to another, we do alot with Amazon so some yrs are busy all yr long,I've worked city and road after 12+ yrs in the city I went back to the road, xboard love it but I've been on the road before Estes so I am use to it, been here going on 16 yrs , equipment is a problem but so are nasty drivers.you can get held up in a terminal but if you run hard you can get 2600 to 3000 miles a week @ .74cpm you can make good money central dispatch is much better than city dispatch

Pros

Top rate pay for LTL ,right now alot of frt, some terminals better than others some motels better than others

Cons

Trucks, management some terminals better than others and some are just clueless

Scheduled runs have to wait to long for loads. Too many outside carriers. The International sleeper units are junk. Rough riding, can't sleep. Waiting for loads cuts into home time.

Equipment is mostly newer with some very old trailers still in the fleet. Buying more automatics lately too which are a pain but because they are new have very few issues. Getting trucks that do have serious issues fixed is one of the company's biggest weak points. It really doesn't appear to matter who works on them either. Very frustrating. Slow time of year is typically Jan & Feb and that's it. Easy to get 5-10 hrs OT/wk and that is over 40 hrs (not 52 or whatever they make you do in the backward parts of the country).

Pros

Weekly pay Easy yet busy days Reliable ownership

Cons

Lack of good management at times Equipment repair difficulty No clear dispatch at all for p&d drivers

They are hard to get on with, but once you do...NEVER let it go, I worked for OLd Dominion, and my buddy works for Estes, and they pay excellent, good equipment, and they work you... some of thier policies may seam strange, bt Its a small price to pay to make 70 K plus a year, and many of thier drivers are in the 80K range

Work for Estes

My Daughter and her husband work for Estes. He has worked there for 15 years. She got her cdl three years ago. She has to have a years exp. to get on with them. They now run from Dallas to Calf. twice aweek. They do pay good. The trucks leave a little to be desired at times. The break down rate is high. But again the pay rate makes up for it. sometimes he wants to quit, but she talks him down. She likes the money and he does two. I recently got my cdl and my goal is to the year that I need to apply to them.. Hope this helps

Work for Estes

I worked there for 10 years and was very happy untill ____ took it over then the place went to hell in a handbasket. he stopped buying new equipment, and repairing the old. got rid of most of the tm's that new anything, and took care of there people. they stop hiring full time and started that utility driver crap and dropped the starting pay from 17.50 to 15.00 and they could use you anywhere. senuroity went out the window with it to. i never missed a day untill i got sickwith a intestinal infection and had to go too a doctor and hospital alot. got so aggravated by TM wrighting me up even though i had doctors letters. i said forget it and moved on dont make as much money but am alot happier

Estes Express

Hi, all. Been at Estes since July of last year. I have to say I'm real happy here as a hub driver after 2 plus years for another LTL carrier that will remain unnammed at least for now. It sounds like they have you slated for an extra board position. I've run into guys that like this and some that don't. It seems to get down to how many miles you're getting and thats completely understandable. They will run you where ever they need you as runs come up and possibly cover regular runs when someone is out for 1 reason or other. The only downside to linehall here is that if you're running meet and swaps, you have to rely on another driver, his equipment, and his terminal getting him out on time. As an extra board guy, you may not have to deal with this all that often though unless you are covering existing regular runs. Most of the guys out of my barn seem to be happy as I haven't heard very much at all I'd consider negative as opposed to my last position where there were quite a few drivers that weren't happy.

Im a local driver for them, and not very happy with the pay vs the work. Been here for a year and was about to give it up. I started running line haul more, got to say its way better and the pay as well. May just stay after all, there seems to be plenty of line haul work.

Fed Ex Freight or Estes express?

A quick update, I decided to go with Estes over FED EX Freight.... I been here at Estes for a week and a half, and I think I made one of the best decisions Ive ever made. I've been driving for over 10 years, I 've worked several jobs, in several different industries including 6 years in freight with another major carrier and this feel like a perfect match for me. I ve always heard good things about them, and SO FAR..... I can echo the things I heard about them.. great company.
