I
just left Gordon/Heartland after working for them for 8 months. My only reasons
for leaving were low miles/low pay, but they were always on top of safety
issues and would never push me to drive, especially if there was a safety issue
with the truck. On the contrary they're overly safety obsessed with drivers and
their trucks. You can't pull into a terminal without a safety inspection and
you now need to get an oil change/service inspection every 8,000 miles which is
a big pain in the butt, so much so that a lot of drivers avoid terminals so
they don't lose the driving hours.
A dm that is caught pushing a driver to move with bad equipment risks immediate
termination, so I'm having a little trouble with all of this. All it takes is a
short macro message to their OTR department and the truck will be taken out of
service where it sits and the dm will need to find another driver for their hot
load. I used qualcomm several times for problems with the truck and they were
always on top of things and had me taken care of very quickly.

I
just quit GTI/ Heartland a few weeks ago and I'm glad I did. The 1st week of
july was when the merger was completed and right after this happened everything
started going downhill real quick. Miles started going down for a couple months
prior to the completion and Heartlands policies were just idiotic. Gordons
drivers are quitting faster than they can replace them and even GTI's
dispatchers are leaving. The Gordon family is actually very upset with
Heartless Express because they are changing everything and that was never part
of the deal. Shortly after the merger completion Heartland started moving
dispatchers around and when they took mine from me that was the last straw and
luckily the load I was under was going near the Lathrop terminal, so I
delivered the load and then dropped the truck off, cleaned it out, and got out
while I still could. Heartless Express pissed me off so much that I actually
found a non-driving job near my house.
So for anyone thinking about driving for Heartless, take this warning and stay
away, and even if you drive one of the blue Gordon trucks you are still driving
for Heartland. They treat you like you are a piece of poo. You will sit for
days at a time and then get a short haul load, only to have to sit again.
With Gordon I was running 2700-3000 miles per week and never had to take a 34hr
restart out on the road and once Heartland took over I was lucky to get 2200
miles week but typically would average less than 2000 miles per week and was
taking 34hr restarts at least once a week.

It all depends on where you live from what I hear. I get 3000 to 3200 miles a week working the 11 western states but I've heard that drivers who do mostly the southwest are sitting around a lot. If you're a new driver they'll start you at .31 a mile or .32 with hazmat. If you have at least a couple years under your belt they'll start you around .40. It still might be a good place to learn but things are changing fast. The apu units are nice though. I will hate giving them up.

Sorry
i have not kept up with the diary and mileage; It would not have made a
difference as the miles were not there. Otherwise a very good company.
But the big news is that, NO MORE
GORDON AFTER JULY 16TH.
The company will be fully absorbed by Heartland Express. All Gordon drivers
will become Heartland drivers.
This is a shame as they(Gordon) have a very good reputation.
My friend will be looking for local work in the Phoenix area.

They most definitely bought Gordon to expand
their reach and as they slowly phase out the daycabs its going to get worse and
worse as we have to sit and wait to load/unload to really short runs where they
pay us by the mile and then $20 for the short haul. I'm trying to hold out
until next spring and then I'm long gone.
