Cons
No communication from dispatchers or managers. Flatbed drivers have to tarp and strap on their off duty and sleeper time in order to get loads out the next day. Pay is consistently screwed up and not corrected until 3-4 weeks later- sometimes not at all. Manager 's favorite saying was" its not my problem. " This applies to every and any situation that came up on an hourly basis.

Well, they DO pay phenomenal----1)
Eventually, or 2) immediately if you're willing to put in the hours. Trust me
on that.
i don't have time to get into it now---very busy. Will update my UPS freight
diary asap.
Now IF you have a kid or a few kids, a mortgage and a car payment or two then
YES, you might think about going somewhere else because the first 2-3 years may
be rough.
But after you make top pay..............we got drivers here who are driving
Cadillacs and Lincolns like it's no big deal. Several local guys have made OVER
100k. Not too shabby for a home every night weekends completely off gig.

A: I currently running for UPS frieght as an Oo. It's 1.02 + fsc which is 20 cpm this week. They cover tolls, scales, provide plate and permits a few dollars a month for pre pass and ezpass. They have gotten rid of most of the old trailers, nice new ones. You run 2500 to 3k+ a week they use trippak, and pay in 24 hours of receiving it. But it's got to get there meaning dropping in the box on Monday and you get paid Thursday so if you drop them through the week money flows. Com data fuel card with discounts off the cash price. Mostly terminal to terminal lots of overnight driving during the week you do 450 to 650 mile trips on the weekend is when you score the big 800+ mile trips. Paper logs but you can only log 63mph for the day max 693 miles per drive cycle. You'll do some sitting but by the end of the week your like idk how I ran that many miles. Dispatch over the phone and that's all I can think of hope that helps any questions I'll try to answer them

I've been working for UPS Freight Truckload
for a while now and thought I'd share some input from my own experience. For
starters the truckload division of UPS can be hit or miss, and rather or not
you like the job will vary from account to account since allot of the work is
dedicated. My particular account is tolerable... Like myself and some others,
we naively associated the "UPS" name in UPS Freight Truckload with
everything good.
UPS Freight Truckload is the non-union side of UPS, and if you hire on thinking
after a year of service you will be able to transfer to the union side, all I
can say is good luck! The rules are out of this world! At UPSFTL you will see
there is the right way, wrong way, and UPS way. You will eat, live and breathe
UPSFTL, it's like some sadistic occult. There is discrimination from our union
counterparts, I never admit to working for truckload when a brown truck is
around.
Equipment seems to be okay, it's all rental not much else. Pay is okay too, no
complaints. Rules, did I mention rules? They are as STRICT as they are many!
Ultimately, nature of the work, pay, schedule, hours, equipment, management,
etc, etc all varies from account to account. I can try to answer questions, but
end up totally wrong since this information only applies to my account. This is
more or less a guide to warn those to be cautious when associating the name
"UPS" with this division.
All-in-all I can honestly say I'm content. I'm not getting rich, but I do okay,
however, I am young, single with no family and have low overhead costs. One of
my co-workers on the other hand says he's not making enough. Not a great job,
but okay...

Bucky, glad you sit some of these people straight. I find some of the comments about UPS right down ignorant. Yes, both UPS and UPS Freight are union with the exception of a couple of terminals in the freight division(bunch of "parasites") The truckload division is not union. Both UPS and UPS Freight are "prime" jobs, excellent pay and benefits.

Just fill out the application, go on the interview and see what the TM has to say. I work as a feeder driver for UPS and if I wasn't working for that side of the company I would be working at UPSF. They are a solid outfit with good drivers and some of the new Volvo tractors are awesome. Both areas take real good care of the equipment so you don't get screwed with by DOT.

Q: What's a typical day driving for UPS like? How many hours do you work? What was your starting pay? Do you get overtime? How do you transport heavy packages (Like if you need to use the stairs)? What do you do if your vehicle breaks down? Do you have to work in any other positions in the company before becoming a driver? If yes, what position and for how long? What do you like and dislike about your job? How many days do you get off each week/month? What advice would you give to someone considering this job? What benefits do you receive? Lastly, what are the differences in job duties for someone driving
A: 1) Um it can be pretty hectic. i think this
varies from terminal to terminal though. For instance the southeast doesn't
have as much traffic congestion---thus a smoother day.
2) At least 9 hours a day, but lately i've been
doing anywhere from 12-14. Again, this may vary from terminal to terminal.
3) i started at $17.40. If you have one or more
kids and/or a mortgage and/or one or more car payments and your spouse doesn't
work or also has a low paying job then you better think twice about joining
UPSF. The pay does go to $27+ after 4 years though.
4) Yes, after 8 or 40.
5) We mostly use a handtruck. We DON'T do stairs.
The customer would have to come out and get it.
6) You wait for a tow truck or mechanic, on the
clock of course.
7) No, but i think the company does help you get a
cdl if you want. Not 100% sure though.
8 Dislikes---too much pressure, too much rushing,
the trucks aren't all that great. Likes---a well run, well organized company.
9) We only get weekends off
10) i don't know----if you like LTL then you'll
probably do ok.
11) Not exactly sure about all the benefits, but
free health and dental at the least.
12) Dealing with customers, counting and verifying
freight when picking up/delivering. If linehaul then you don't have to worry
about any of that. You're main duty would be staying awake.

Q: Would you mind providing a link for this L/P
program. I've been at UPSF for some time now and have never heard of it. o/o
are here sporadicly and they get the short end of the
stick. What we do have that is completely new is what they call a LHD, (line
haul driver) which goes terminal to terminal during the week and hopefully home
by friday, (running wild in a day cab basically). That position will be paid
significantly lower than what we currently make but I believe its on par with
some of the other companies out there.
70's driver, there is no Overnite division, all of
UPSF acquired Overnite.
A: https://upsfreightowneroperators.com/ This is the link for you. Sorry it took so long but I had my father in ER on Friday night, he was admitted and discharged yesterday evening while my mother had major back surgery yesterday at the same hospital. .92/mi, plates/permits paid, tolls, etc reimbursed, .45/mi is the current FSC. All 100% D/H, mostly terminal to terminal, paid practical miles. Any input would be great. Feel free to share with others. Thanks!!!

So many rumors and
misconceptions about UPS Freight.
We are still an LTL company, some operations are different, some are still the
same.
Im a Senior driver, so im happy with the job. Go further down the seniority
list, and some are not so happy. But there hasn't been an LTL company I've
worked at that didnt have it that way.
I think the money is great on the freight side, parcel employees make very good
money because small pack is a huge money maker. Not using Reflective vests,
horns while backing and at terminal crosswalks, seatbelts in yard whenever the
truck is moving (hooking sets included) are all write up(able).
It's all worth putting up with, IMO.

UPSF right now has some issues. We are currently still waiting for a new contract as it was turned down a few months ago. My terminal the supervisors are fairly cool as long as you do the right thing. Also theirs a lot of old overnite management still as well. We are currently the highest paid LTL company so that's a huge plus. Drivers do have to work the dock but as you gain more seniority you don't have too. It's not hard but it gets tiring. To be honest I'd rather work the dock then go into P/D again.
