Pros
Good trucks, trailers are much better as they retire the old ones, dispatch is good for me, but can be changed if not, home time when requested, mostly.
Cons
Doesn't feel like upper management listens really well, but direct contact and middle level does. And that's most of who you deal with. Olive Branch shop is the best.
Former Employee - Jul 19, 2018
Pros
All Automatics. Gov'd @ 68 during my time. Multiple driver programs, solo, dedicated, team.
Cons
Like most, dispatch can be hit and miss. They definitely do not review your HOS and will call you during your sleep time if you don't respond to load assignments. You are going to the NE/Newark and PA areas like it or not. Trailers tend to have bald tires. Run the risk or get penalized having repairs done on your time w/o compensation. Service is 24/36 out on first come/first serve

So
here's what you want to know. If you are a new driver total can be a great
start. They will put you in orientation for a week, 70 bucks a day with hotel
and full meals. After that it's 200 hours of training at 70 a day and 10 hours
of backing, about a month depending on how hard your trainer pushes it.
Pay is .36 staring so there are far worse companies to start with. When i
started I was pulling average of 3200 miles a week , possibly a little more. I
wanted to keep busy and had a great fleet manager. My best week was about 3750,
with a 34. They do a lot of drop and hooks but most of it seems pretty random.
Some weeks I'd have the same trailer for 5 days and would end up pulling the
full 14. Now I pull for Amazon and although they can be sketchy with load
cancels at times you still get layover and load cancels. I run less than my old
average but am on dedicated runs in the south.
It all boils down to your fleet manager(if your FM cant keep you as busy as
youd like they allow switching). If they are decent they will keep you more
busy than you might want to be. I stayed out for 3 months at a time for the
first year to catch up on bills and it worked pretty well as OTR. If you're a
new driver I'd recommend it you just gotta remind yourself, just like any job
you take, your going to have weeks where the truck needs service of a trailer
gets denied and needs to be patched. Best of luck, if you have more questions
give a shout.

I
see their trucks running around the Southeast quite often, they aren't governed
at 65mph and are usually Cascadias in good shape, with a nice size sleeper.
You can tell a lot about a company by the condition of their equipment and
theirs is in good shape.

I'm about 2/3 of the way through training with Total to become a team driver. The program is as advertised, no BS. One of my classmates in Total orientation worked for Amazon Fulfillment before getting his CDL and he chose Total because he questioned many of the drivers from the various companies that deliver to Amazon and he said the Total drivers had fewer complaints. If you are Hazmat and run the average team miles of 20 to 23 thousand a month you and your team mate will make $6000 each. I'm pretty early in the process, but I don't regret anything about joining Total and from what I have seen so far it is a decent place.

I've
been with Total for 4 years now. Came straight out of CDL school. I've been
very happy here. It has it's ups and downs, good and bad. But overall I would
say it's a very good place. Anyone who comes in with a chip on their shoulder
or an attitude...won't last. You definitely have to "earn" your
place. But once you do, they take very good care of you. Honestly, if I ever
leave Total, it'll be a sad day for me. A lot of those guys feel like family to
me.
Training has undergone an overhaul in the last two years so I can't be too
specific about it without risking giving you misinformation.
Regarding Chinatowns suggestion of Abilene, I second giving them a look as
well. I've heard pretty good things from most all of their drivers that I've
encountered.
